Barry Athletic rounds off 2018 on a high!

As you might know, we’re absolutely thrilled to be sponsoring the Barry Athletic Bowls Club for a second year in a row. We provided the team with embroidered jackets at the start of the year and head down to the club to watch the games!

What a season it has been for the teams at Barry Athletic! The First Team have regained promotion to the top division of the Private Greens League, where they’ve maintained a strong performance all year. The First Team have lost just three games all year in the league program! Plus, they had a great run in the National Tournaments: the Carruthers Shield and the Barry Bowl, where they reached the last 16 and the quarterfinal respectively.

The Second Team has also had an impressive season where they did extremely well to retain their place in the Top Division, in a very competitive league with a number of outstanding victories both home and away during the season.

The Midweek Team were delighted to lift the Munro Cup which is competed for across the Vale of Glamorgan – the first time in almost 30 years that the Club has won the Munro Cup trophy! To cap that achievement a rink from the club won the Private Greens single rink competition; a tough tournament that is competed for by some of the strongest clubs in Welsh bowls.

The club was also delighted to provide a new international player to the Welsh team, when Martin Clarke-Squires represented Wales for the first time in the British Isles series where Wales were successful in lifting the trophy for the first time in a number of years!

On the county and national competition front it was another good year of competitions for the club with seven members qualifying for the county and national finals including representation in all the singles events. The highlight for the club from these events was the success achieved by Club Chairman, Richard Bowen, in winning the National Senior Singles event, the club’s 20th National Tournament win in its 107-year history!

The club also successfully hosted the preparation event for the Atlantic Games in 2019, as well as an under 18s test match against Scotland. In both events, they were very flattered to receive many compliments about the green and facilities. All in all, a glorious season in 2018 for Barry Athletic!

However, the work does not end with the ending of the season for Barry Athletic. Throughout the winter they will be updating the green watering system and putting a new kitchen in to the pavilion; there’s plenty to keep them busy before the green opens again at Easter 2019!
